All four Marian dogmas underwent much debate and argumentation before they were approved by papal bull. It appears DDF's prefect prematurely jumped into the frey. Cardinal Burke, Bishop Schneider, Mariologist Miravalle and many others have expressed positive opinions about the theological underpinnings of the titles in question. I'm troubled by Fr. Lanzetta's conclusion:
"Formally speaking, the Mariological Note approved by the Holy Father becomes part of the ordinary magisterium and therefore requires a religious assent of intellect and will, even though it belongs to the lowest magisterial level, is not infallible and is not exempt from possible error."
I cannot in good conscience accept the DDF Prefect's inadequately researched conclusions considering the weight and diversity of the authoritative opinions publushed that argue against the DDF opinion. I cannot in good conscience assent to other DDF letters approved by the Pope such as Traditionis Custodes, Fiducia Supplicans, and Amoris Laetitia. Let us recall whatever the circumstances at the time that Pope Liberius in the 4th century condemned and exiled St. Athanasius for his defense of the Nicene Creed which affirmed the divinity of Christ. Church historian Fr. John Laux wrote that under Pope Liberius, the majority of Catholic bishops embraced the Arian heresy. While I'm not suggesting MPF is heretical, I humbly argue that the question of our Lady's role and titles should continue in the realm of speculative theology and should be appropriately debated by the bishops and scholars. This is the type of weighty subjects that calls for a synod to be convened for bishops to deliberate, argue, and decide, NOT the prefabricated issues "change agents" and "provocateurs" are dreaming up for the Church currently going on around the world.

The baptised are to use their position in Christ and their access to the Holy Spirit to grow in virtue. Overcoming fear, then anger, then contempt as well as lust and greed do not happen by magic. Be awed by the knowledge that just one person, born without original sin, managed to live an entire lifetime without sinning. She needs no grand titles and gets no honour by having multiple titles attributed to her.
Both popular piety and the mind of the Church as expressed in her indulgenced prayers and liturgical praxis (in the East and West) are very lavish in granting to the Most Holy Virgin very many grand titles (e.g., the Litany of Loreto).

Indeed, one of your fellow monks is in jail in the UK for multiple offences of sexual abuse to women who were seeing him for counselling, one of whom is my wife. My local ordinary has several times asked me to discern for him the state of a presbyter whose behaviour was being investigated. One Augustinian priest of a teaching order who fathered a child with a married fellow teacher, our parish priest molesting a vulnerable maiden in the local youth group and a Passionist Brother who was youth pastor in a later parish I attended and who molested the female children of the head of the parish council.
For many years I have felt distaste at the multiple titles for the Virgin. But the truth of the matter is that these great titles are attributed to Mary not for HER benefit but for OURS.
When we rightly honour God as Father, Creator, Redeemer and Saviour of all, we place ourselves in right relationship with Him.
In the same way, when we acknowledge the Virgin as Theotokos, Queen of Heaven and earth, Mediatrix of all graces, and indeed co-redemption, we place ourselves in right relationship with the Father, the Son and the Spirit

When the document was presented ("Presentation"), the DDF officials stated their intention not to impose limits on Mariological reflection and development.
Now, in the century or so leading to this document, Mariological development at the magisterial level became more "maximalist," explicitly favoring both the terms and the underlying doctrinal concepts of "Mediatrix" and "Coredemptrix."
Therefore, the document did not intend to stifle either these titles or the doctrinal framework that under-girds them.
Here is another syllogism:
Texts of the ordinary magisterium -- even non-infallible ones -- are to be given "religious assent of intellect and will" by all the faithful, including the signatories of MPF.
But the previous magisterial documents (namely, those of Popes Pius IX, Leo XIII, Pius X, Pius XI, John Paul II, and Paul VI, cited by Fr. Serafino in his text) taught in a "maximalist" Marian way.
Therefore, the faithful, including the signatories of MPF, owe those magisterial texts the religious assent of intellect and will.
This second syllogism shows the problem we are faced with: evident contradictions in the non-infallible ordinary magisterium.
It needs to be stated that many reputable theologians point out that the "religious assent of intellect and will" does not rule out the possibility of error. Hence, in this question, the ultimate need of a higher-level magisterial intervention.
I hope this helped and didn't confuse things further!
Translate Co Redemptrix into Co-redeemer or other modern language forms and you will gain insight into why the title gives many devout Western and Eastern Christians pause. It’s hard to imagine a more exalted title than Mother of God - which has no ambiguity at all, unlike Co-redeemer.

Thank you, Diane, for publishing Fr. Lanzetta's analysis of Mater Populi Fidelis. It is fitting whether Catholics agree with a maximilist or minimalist interpretation of the titles and appellations in question that the subject fall within the realm of "speculative theology". All four Marian dogmas underwent much debate and argumentation before they were approved by papal bull. It appears DDF's prefect prematurely jumped into the frey. Cardinal Burke, Bishop Schneider, Mariologist Miravalle and many others have expressed positive opinions about the theological underpinnings of the titles in question. I'm troubled by Fr. Lanzetta's conclusion:
"Formally speaking, the Mariological Note approved by the Holy Father becomes part of the ordinary magisterium and therefore requires a religious assent of intellect and will, even though it belongs to the lowest magisterial level, is not infallible and is not exempt from possible error."
I cannot in good conscience accept the DDF Prefect's inadequately researched conclusions considering the weight and diversity of the authoritative opinions publushed that argue against the DDF opinion. I cannot in good conscience assent to other DDF letters approved by the Pope such as Traditionis Custodes, Fiducia Supplicans, and Amoris Laetitia. Let us recall whatever the circumstances at the time that Pope Liberius in the 4th century condemned and exiled St. Athanasius for his defense of the Nicene Creed which affirmed the divinity of Christ. Church historian Fr. John Laux wrote that under Pope Liberius, the majority of Catholic bishops embraced the Arian heresy. While I'm not suggesting MPF is heretical, I humbly argue that the question of our Lady's role and titles should continue in the realm of speculative theology and should be appropriately debated by the bishops and scholars. This is the type of weighty subjects that calls for a synod to be convened for bishops to deliberate, argue, and decide, NOT the prefabricated issues "change agents" and "provocateurs" are dreaming up for the Church currently going on around the world.

The baptised are to use their position in Christ and their access to the Holy Spirit to grow in virtue. Overcoming fear, then anger, then contempt as well as lust and greed do not happen by magic. As maturing Christians we are then sensitised to the needy and to the unbeliever, both in vast numbers and both needing to be evangelised.
Be awed by the knowledge that just one person, born without original sin, managed to live an entire lifetime without sinning. She needs no grand titles and gets no honour by having multiple titles attributed to her.
Both popular piety and the mind of the Church as expressed in her indulgenced prayers and liturgical praxis (in the East and West) are very lavish in granting to the Most Holy Virgin very many grand titles (e.g., the Litany of Loreto).

I sail through the Nicene Creed, speaking "of one being" where the Thomist neologism "consubstantial" interrupts.
I was baptised as an infant, raised in Australia catechised by missionary nuns and Marist Brothers being inducted into the sacramental life of confession, holy communion and confirmation and completed University education in the Catholic residential College of St John's at University of Sydney. During my undergraduate days I went to the Aquinas Academy weekly where a passionate zealot taught the full syllabus of Thomist philosophy and theology.
I had an individual encounter with Our Lady of Lourdes alone at the grotto in the dead of winter and besides a deep healing was directed on a pathway which brought me to the Catholic Charismatic renewal in London where I was baptised in the spirit and endowed with multiple gifts of the Spirit which included discernment of spirits, prophesy, gifts of healings as well as tongue speaking.

Indeed, one of your fellow monks is in jail in the UK for multiple offences of sexual abuse to women who were seeing him for counselling, one of whom is my wife. My local ordinary has several times asked me to discern for him the state of a presbyter whose behaviour was being investigated. One Augustinian priest of a teaching order who fathered a child with a married fellow teacher, our parish priest molesting a vulnerable maiden in the local youth group and a Passionist Brother who was youth pastor in a later parish I attended and who molested the female children of the head of the parish council.

For many years I have felt distaste at the multiple titles for the Virgin. But the truth of the matter is that these great titles are attributed to Mary not for HER benefit but for OURS.
When we rightly honour God as Father, Creator, Redeemer and Saviour of all, we place ourselves in right relationship with Him.

I would not presume to answer for Fr. Serafino, but those lines stood out to me, too. Consider the following syllogism to be my own reading of his line of thought:
When the document was presented ("Presentation"), the DDF officials stated their intention not to impose limits on Mariological reflection and development.
Now, in the century or so leading to this document, Mariological development at the magisterial level became more "maximalist," explicitly favoring both the terms and the underlying doctrinal concepts of "Mediatrix" and "Coredemptrix."
Therefore, the document did not intend to stifle either these titles or the doctrinal framework that under-girds them.
Here is another syllogism:
Texts of the ordinary magisterium -- even non-infallible ones -- are to be given "religious assent of intellect and will" by all the faithful, including the signatories of MPF.
But the previous magisterial documents (namely, those of Popes Pius IX, Leo XIII, Pius X, Pius XI, John Paul II, and Paul VI, cited by Fr. Serafino in his text) taught in a "maximalist" Marian way.
Therefore, the faithful, including the signatories of MPF, owe those magisterial texts the religious assent of intellect and will.
This second syllogism shows the problem we are faced with: evident contradictions in the non-infallible ordinary magisterium.
It needs to be stated that many reputable theologians point out that the "religious assent of intellect and will" does not rule out the possibility of error. Hence, in this question, the ultimate need of a higher-level magisterial intervention.

Translate Co Redemptrix into Co-redeemer or other modern language forms and you will gain insight into why the title gives many devout Western and Eastern Christians pause. It’s hard to imagine a more exalted title than Mother of God - which has no ambiguity at all, unlike Co-redeemer.
