In my opinion, Fernandez who Francis elevated to the college of cardinals only recently in 2023 was picked by Francis to head as Prefect the most important Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith in the Vatican to "follow and obey". The dicastery was formerly called the Holy Office and more recently under Cardinals Ratzinger and Muller, the Congregation of the Doctrine of the the Faith whose critical role second only to the Pope is to "promote and safeguard the integrity of Catholic teaching on faith and morals". Fernandez is an Argentine and long time colleague and collaborator of Francis. Again in my view, I believe he was handpicked not because he was a highly respected theologian but because Francis would have a trusted ally who would perform his job as a good "yes man". It was a political choice. A TRAGIC choice and everyone is dancing around the issue of his incompetence and the confusion and division he has caused. The whole point of tradition is that it is complete in itself. “Progress” is a worldly idea.
